Worked word guide

How to Reason Through a Rungshift Word Ladder

Rungshift asks you to transform one five-letter word into another by changing exactly one position per rung. A submitted rung must belong to the game's approved graph and cannot repeat a word already used in your route. The practical challenge is to preserve future options instead of chasing a letter match that leaves no useful continuation.

What this guide helps you decide

How do I choose legal rungs and recover from a dead end in Rungshift without confusing assistance with an automatic move?

This guide explains Rungshift's current public word-ladder rules and one deterministic teaching route already used by the game's visual demo. It does not expose Daily schedules, hidden future endpoints, or the full internal graph.

One legal rung at a time

Daily and Free use the same legality checks. Undo is a normal strategy tool; Nudge and Reveal are optional assistance and mark the run Assisted without submitting a move for you.

Five-letter word ladders

Rungshift: Word Ladder

Rungshift accepts a rung only when it is an approved five-letter graph word, differs from the current word in exactly one position, and has not already appeared in the route.

Worked examples

These are compact rule examples based on the current public mechanic. They explain the deduction without revealing a live puzzle answer.

Rule example 1

Check whether a rung is legal

You are on BREAD and consider BROAD as the next rung.

  1. Both words contain five letters and BROAD belongs to the reviewed game graph.
  2. Only the second letter changes: BREAD → BROAD.
  3. If BROAD has not appeared earlier in this route, the move is legal.

Takeaway: A familiar-looking word is not enough; a legal rung must satisfy graph membership, exactly one changed position, and no route repetition.

Rule example 2

Follow the verified BREAD-to-BROOK teaching route

The game's deterministic 2026-09-02 teaching fixture starts at BREAD and targets BROOK with par 3.

  1. BREAD → BROAD changes one letter.
  2. BROAD → BROOD changes one letter.
  3. BROOD → BROOK changes one letter.
  4. The target is reached in three moves, which the fixture independently checks against its canonical par.

Takeaway: The route is BREAD → BROAD → BROOD → BROOK. It is a teaching fixture already exercised by the game demo, not a revealed current Daily answer.

Rule example 3

Recover from a route that stops helping

Your current route is legal, but the next words you can see do not appear to move you toward the target.

  1. Undo can remove a legal but unhelpful rung without marking the run Assisted.
  2. Nudge reveals only the next changed letter position and does not submit a word.
  3. Reveal shows one shortest-graph rung but still does not auto-submit it; using Nudge or Reveal marks the run Assisted.

Takeaway: Use Undo for ordinary route exploration; use Nudge or Reveal only when you want explicit assistance and accept the Assisted label.

First-party methodology

How we checked this

We checked the current Rungshift legality contract and its deterministic engine-backed teaching fixture. The BREAD → BROAD → BROOD → BROOK route is the same reviewed demo fixture already exercised by the product; the other examples describe public move and assistance rules rather than future Daily content.
